HOPE TOTES

A TOTE OF HOPE

HOW WE MAKE A DIFFERENCE

Before volunteering with my young children for a domestic violence shelter, I never realized how traumatic the experience is, especially for children. We saw time after time women arriving with their children and only what they had on.  Too often there was no time to pack or prepare before leaving a dangerous situation. There wasn’t a program in place to provide these children with basic necessities when they walked in the door. When I took my own children home to our comfortable house, I couldn’t stop thinking about those scared kids without even a toothbrush. The idea for our charity was formed from those early volunteer days. What if we could at least provide children coming into emergency shelters and safe houses with a bag of basic necessities and provide some hope at the same time? Hope Totes is the program addressing that very need today.

WHAT’S IN A HOPETOTE?
  • Customized For The Child

Each tote includes underwear, pull-ups or diapers according to the age of the child. Each tote is packed with a specific age range and gender in mind to ensure that every child has what he or she needs.

  • Homemade Blanket

Every child age six and under receives a handmade blanket made with love from a generous and crafty volunteer. A single blanket to keep warm at night can’t replace loving arms but it’s a start.

  • 3-4 Days of Clothing

We try to include four days of clothing in the warm months and three days in the winter. From shorts, jeans, shirts, underwear, diapers and pull-ups we try to keep as much variety on hand as is possible.

  • Personal Care Necessities

Personal hygiene is not a priority for terrified children entering a system they don’t understand surrounded by people they don’t know but we try to supply each child with as much as we can. We include hygiene basics necessary for proper dental and body care including shampoo, soap, toothpaste and toothbrush and deodorant when appropriate.
