Before volunteering with my young children for a domestic violence shelter, I never realized how traumatic the experience is, especially for children. We saw time after time women arriving with their children and only what they had on. Too often there was no time to pack or prepare before leaving a dangerous situation. There wasn’t a program in place to provide these children with basic necessities when they walked in the door. When I took my own children home to our comfortable house, I couldn’t stop thinking about those scared kids without even a toothbrush. The idea for our charity was formed from those early volunteer days. What if we could at least provide children coming into emergency shelters and safe houses with a bag of basic necessities and provide some hope at the same time? Hope Totes is the program addressing that very need today.
